In the early days, the names "ping pong" and "table tennis" were used interchangeably. In 1901, Hamley Brothers (UK) registered the trademark "ping pong" and shortly afterwards became "jointly concerned" with J. Jaques & Son. Subsequently, J. Jaques & Son sold the rights to the "ping pong" trademark to Parker Brothers in the US. In the 1920s, Parker Brothers enforced its "ping pong" trademark, making various associations change their names from ping pong to table tennis. [FYI - Escalade Sports now owns the trademark "ping pong".]
Common usage today refers to "ping pong" as recreational but serious players call it "table tennis" which is the official name of the sport.
Currently there are only two table tennis clubs within 50 miles of Ocean City, Maryland.
